importing car without dvla, sva etc?

Postby dann_the_van on Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:36 pm

hi.

i'm looking to import a car from the us, north carolina to the uk, south wales.

the car is a ford mustang 1964 1/2 - its a runner, but in need iof restoration/work. this i intend to do here in the UK.
as i don't wish to register the car for road use until the car has been restored (trailer collected from port), please could anyone inform me upon the legal requirements, processes etc?

as i understand it, as long as it clears us/uk imports/customs etc, with clear car title etc, and tax/duty paid, the car can be collected without being registered???

if it is a legal requirement, even for a car that will not be used on uk roads, probably for approx 1-2 years, is there another way to import the car? is. as a personal possession? scrap metal? etc?

i would find it silly to have to register, modify a car that isn't intended for uk road use immediately

any advice, guidance and information would be appreciated.

many kind regards

I imported a Peterbilt truck last September she came in a container and I paid all the duties/vat etc when it landed.and so far I havn't registered it.The only slight problem is the agent didnt get the customs certificate for me to register the truck at the time of import and I have just got it by having to resend copies of all the docs to customs and they have now issued me with the certificate.
